Fast, Easy Adjustments with Smart Select
Unlike most drills, Black & Decker Smart Select Drills make it easy to set your drill up correctly for specific jobs. Instead of having to guess which clutch, speed, and torque settings are right for a task, you simply pick the icon that most accurately represents that job you're taking on. Correctly setting your drill reduces the possibility of stripping a screw head, snapping a screw off, or driving too far into your work surface.

The 11 easy-to-read project icons let you account for driving small and large screws, drilling narrow and wide holes, and working with wood, metal, or plastic. Even experienced craftsmen are likely to enjoy the way this eliminates the trial and error process, which can result in damaing your work surface or project materials. This improved functionality is sure to be a bonus, whether you're building a doghouse, hanging bookshelves, or assembling custom furniture.

Cordless Design that's Comfortable to Grip
A rechargeable 18-volt battery means that this drill has plenty of power to meet the needs of any homeowner, even the most serious do-it-yourself enthusiast. 18-volt drills offer an extra boost of power for projects that involve driving a large number of screws or drilling through tough surfaces. A bigger battery means that you don't have to stop and recharge or switch battery packs, the way you might with a 9- or 12-volt drill. This Smart Select model from Black & Decker is relatively compact, so you can also use it to complete ordinary repairs without battling against the awkwardness of a standard high-voltage hammer drill. And since this drill is cordless, you won't have to worry about straying from your power source, tripping, or threading a cord into an awkward space for a quick repair.

Any tool that fits comfortably in your hand improves your ability to get jobs done quickly and precisely, and a well balanced drill is no exception. This Smart Select Drill offers a T-style handle placed near the middle of the drill for improved comfort. The T-style distributes the tool's weight so that it doesn't tip forward and work against you on the job. And a T-style grip reduces wrist strain, so you can work comfortably for longer.

Another great feature is the keyless chuck, which means you'll never have to worry about a misplaced chuck key bringing work to a standstill. It's easy to change bits quickly, and you're less likely to have to stop and take protective gloves off than you would be with a chuck system. You'll find the ease of this setup extra convenient if you need to switch between driving and drilling often.

This Smart Select Drill is backed by a full two-year warranty.

user comment Black & Decker BD18PSK 18 Volt Smart Select Drill Be prepared to throw it away after a few years

Here's what you need to know about ALL Black and Decker cordless products: The batteries have a 3 to 5 year lifespan, according to the manufacturer, after which they must be replaced. (I just got off the phone with their 800 number)

If you call and ask to purchase a new charger, as I did, you will be told that using a new charger with old batteries will simply destroy the new charger. Therefore they will not sell you a new charger without you also buying a new battery.

Coincidentally, a single replacement battery costs as much as running down to Lowes and buying a new drill with a charger and not one, but two, new batteries.

So every 36 months, Black and Decker would like you to throw away your present B&D drill and buy a new one. If you have any problems with it whatsoever, as I did, you can expect that they will refuse to sell you repleacement items and you will be forced to buy a whole new unit.

Black and Decker just lost me as a customer.

This was about my 5th rechargeable drill and definitely the strongest, but it finally smoked after a couple years. I used this a lot building my house, especially driving all the screws when hanging drywall. But had to use my 3/8" plug-in drill for 1/2" and larger wood boring, and for putting screws in metal roofing. The cordless chuck works better than B&D plug-in 3/8 drill, but still slips some. The batteries hold a charge for a long time, and were still going strong when the drill smoked. I have had a few good B&D tools (compound mitre saw and reciprocating saw) and a few junk ones (nice variable speed sabre saw that won't hold onto the blade no matter what I do). In the long run it would be much less expensive to buy better quality tools that would last and not be so aggravating to use.
