Although I have only had the Drill Doctor for a couple of weeks, it has helped with by projects already. The product does what is says. It makes working with drill dits much more like working with new drill bits or better.
Solid Tool, Economically Sensible!, June 2, 2005

I wasn’t truly convinced I needed a drill bit sharpener until I saw Drill Doctor’s infomercial one night during a bout with insomnia. Anyway, I started thinking about the times when I have been in the middle of a job and had to resort to bearing down with all my might to force a “once-sharp-but-now-dull” drill bit to make a few final holes in order to complete a job. Anyway, bearing down like that is hard on your drill and hard on yourself, so I thought I’d try the DD750PK, and ordered mine from Amazon.
First up, I grabbed a handful of old bits that I had inexplicably saved, and sharpened a few. I was impressed with how easy and accurately the DD750PK sharpened these bits. I sharpened bits from 1/4″ on up, and all went well. The tool really is easy to use.
The lasting impression was made late one Sunday night in my home shop, however. I accidentally demolished the tip on an odd-sized bit. I’m going to skip the particulars about the stupid thing I did to demolish this bit, but the end of it had no taper left whatsoever. It was completely flat. I thought there’d be no way to restore a point to that bit, but I was wrong. With the home centers all closed, finding another bit was not an option, so out came the Drill Doctor. Within just a few minutes, I had that bit back in service — and even though it was 1/4″ shorter than it had been (because of the damage — not because the Drill Doctor takes that much off during sharpening), it actually cut better than when it was new. I was totally impressed at that point. It may not sound like much, but without that Drill Doctor, I would have had to postpone completion of my project until I replaced the bit.
This was exactly the situation I had imagined when I bought the Drill Doctor. I’m a believer in it now, for sure! Plus, if you sharpen enough bits, the thing pays for itself!
The ability to sharpen masonry bits should save me a lot of wear and tear on my drills as well!
My only complaint, and maybe it doesn’t merit knocking it from 5 stars to 4, is that I would like to be able to sharpen up to a 1″ bit. Those darned things are expensive, and naturally, the bigger the bit you can sharpen, the more money you can save.
I highly recommend this tool!

I ordered my Drill Doctor on Friday, 01-28-05 and received it on Monday, 01-31-05. What wonderful service from Amazon.com!
I watched the included video and read the manual and then decided to give it a whirl. My first bit, a 1/2 inch, was perfect! I even checked for accurate centering using my depth micrometer. It was right on. I proceeded to do 24 more dull bits down to a number 40. All came out perfectly. This took about an hour or so.
The only problem I experienced was with small shorter bits. They do not pass through the end of the chuck far enough to turn them with your fingers for proper alignment. I overcame this problem by leaving the chuck not seated on its flats and closeing the alignment paddle gently while slightly rotating the chuck until proper alignment was achieved and then carefully seating the chuck and then tightening it. That took a little practice but the number 40 bit only took three attempts to get it right. I would recommend using a magnifying glass to inspect bits under 1/8 to be sure that they are sharpened correctly. Perhaps the Drill Doctor folks will come out with an additional chuck to handle the smaller sizes better.
Overall, I would recommend this precision tool to anyone who drills many holes and always should have a sharp bit. Well, back to sharpening more bits!

My sharpener is used mostly for small bits. The instructions say that when the grinding wheel wears down, take it out and turn it over. However, the wheel on my unit wouldn’t come off, so I called Drill Doctor’s Hot Line. They advised me to put the whole thing in the freezer for 30 minutes — no kidding — then it would pop off. Sure enough, it did. Great customer service.
Like so many others, I had collected hundreds of dull drill bits. After “mastering” use of the tool, which took all of 30 minutes, I sharpened them all. Almost as good as having new bits. Now, I can pull out the DD and sharpen a single bit, in just a few minutes. Since sharpening a bit shortens it a tad, the only reason for replacing drill bits now is when they are too short, or I break one.
One reviewer complained that the tool is mostly “plastic”. So what, it seems plenty sturdy to hold up for years of use.
“Sharp” means nearly razor sharp. Not like new bits, which are typically blued or otherwise coated. After shapening, bit ends are finely honed at the proper angle. I’ve had a Drill Doctor for a couple of years, and have used it dozens of times — this is definately a 5-star tool.

I think it is overpriced. For the cost, and in my situation, it is easier to just buy new bits.

I bought the DD750 believing I was finally getting a a good bit sharpener. Wrong! If used per instructions–the heel is too high. It took a great deal of patience to find a setting to provide proper relief–and each size drill seems to be different. Once the relief was ok–now I no longer had the angle bit I wanted.
My old $19 grizzley sharpener used with a bench grinder does a better job.

I bought the 750 Drill Doctor as I had accumulated heaps of dull drill bits over the years. I could not get the thing to work until I called the company and, after taking the unit apart, found that a plastic spring like thing was not properly in place. Once that was done the unit worked but only on bits larger than 1/8th inch. Called the company again and they advised how to tweek the unit for better results. Worked only slightly better.
I feel the Drill Doctor is cheaply made with its plastic cams and spring.

There are many good things about this product. When I called tech support with a problem (chuck sticking), I got a human being with a knowledgable answer (loosen a few overtorqued screws) in a matter of minutes. On standard drill bits, it works very well.
However, I got it mostly to sharpen hex-base drill bits, as I use these drill bits with a quick-change chuck all the time. And I basically destroyed several bits (well, they were dull anyway) finding out that the chuck supplied with this unit simply can’t get a proper grip on hex-base drill bits. They will be out of alignment, which means it won’t work, at all. You just grind off random bits of your drill bit at random angles, resulting in a useless bit. Well, I _was_ able to sharpen a few of the bigger hex bits, but the 1/16″, 1/8″, and 3/16″ bits were trashed.
So for my main use–sharpening hex-base bits–this fails pretty badly. If I’d known this, I wouldn’t have gotten it. (Of course none of the marketing information or tech support information mentions this–if they did, they might lose some sales.) So I’ll keep it, but quite disappointed. And no, tech support didn’t have any suggestions for how to fix the problem.
So, if you want to sharpen small hex bits, give this a pass. If you don’t use hex bits, it is a good deal. And the video they supply is excellent for teaching you how to use it.
Your mileage may vary.

Glad I FINALLY bought one!
With the price of drill bits rising every day this baby will pay for itself quickly. Sharpens bit as good as or better than new. If you think you doing a good job sharpening bits on a bench grinder, you’ll be suprised. Don’t know how the hail I ever got along without one of these. Will never have to use a dull bit again. An absolute NECESSITY for anyone working with steel. I would suggest getting an extra wheel upon purchase because once you sharpen about 250 of your dead/dull bits after it arrives, you’ll most likely need a new wheel.

I just received my Drill Doctor 750SPK and was surprised to find that it came with a carrying case which was listed by Amazon.com as an accessory. The first time I used the Drill Doctor it performed perfectly and I was inclined to sharpen even drills that I had previously considered sharp. For normal drill sharpening, I would rate it as 5-star. The only problem I had was with split tips. The drill holder does not slide smoothly in and out of the guide. It requires unnecessay force as far as I am concerned, however with extra effort I can sharpen split tips adequately. I will keep the unit since most of my sharpening is for standard tips. When and if I want to do many split tips, I will bore the guide out a little and and install a “pop-out” spring to move the tip back off the grinding wheel.
Incidently, one reviewer said that he received screwdriver tips instead of drills with his unit. I did not find that to be the case. I received the drills.

Over the years I have collected hundreds of drill bits that served me well when new. But with each project I found myself looking for a sharp bit to complete the task. I needed a repeatable way to sharpen my drill bits. After extensive research and product reviews I purchased the Drill Doctor 750. It did EVERYTHING it promised. It sharpened both small and large bits, it removed all nicks and restored the cuting edge perfectly. The actual process is simple and quick. The video gives good instructions, but practice makes perfect, and I actually enjoyed sharpening all my old bits. I highly recommend the Drill Doctor. It delivers on its promise every time.

This is product is everything good all have said about it. Order fulfill by Amazon - excellent! Unit well packed, handy carry case is superb.
Set up and use - I watched the video 1 & 1 1/2 times. Getting the drill set up properly is the whole equation - and is easy. I have sharpened both angle configurations, and split a few points just to see how easy it is to do. SNAP!
I didn’t realize how bad a shape I was in until I cleaned up every bit I owned. I mostly work wood and don’t demand a lot of twist drills here, but a few metal things came up and I realized I had a sour batch of drills. Problems solved. Everyone needs one of these….or maybe I keep it a secret and make a few $$ fixing up my neighbors tools. It would almost be like stealing. Maybe I’ll do demo’s and sell units.

Sharp bits? What’s the point? I really thought that buying the drill doctor was a luxury purchase, that is until I received and started using it. I had no idea what the difference was between sharp and dull bits, and when I had a really dull bit, I was forced to use the next larger size.
I am a convert! Having access to sharp bits is not a luxury, it is a necessity. The drill doctor seems complicated to use, until you use it a couple of times. Unlike other reviewers, I didn’t start by sharpening all of my bits, I use it only when I need it. It takes about 2 minutes from opening the box to putting it back, and I get to use a sharp bit! Don’t think twice about it, just get a sharpener and decide for yourself if it was worth the money.

I ordered the Drill Doctor 750. I ordered it even though the 500 was about $30 cheaper, but since the Drill Doctor 750 came with a 17 piece bit set, I figured for $30 more I would get a set of drill bits as well as the higher model.
I was surprised to see when it arrived that the 17 piece bit set was not drill bits, but rather screwdriver bits. I have dozens of those…..so I returned the 750 and ordered the 500. I made the assumption that by ordering a DRILL Doctor that I would receive DRILL bits, not screwdriver bits.
The product itself never left the box before I returned it, so I cannot attest to it’s value or worth.
Need to change the wording in the ad so others are not mislead as I was.

In short, you can sharpen all kinds of bits with this. It takes a little practice, and you have to watch the video, but once you master it, it wil be your friend forever. The local Sears has it for a little more, but they cary the replacement diamond dusted wheeel in case you ruin yours by not watching the video and thinking you know it all. This is one find product that you won’t regret buying if you use a lot of drill bits. It will pay for itself by the cost of every bit that you do not throw away for the rest of your life. Don’t loan it out, it takes know-how to use it properly, and the wheel can be ruined by someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Watch the video before you try to use it, not after you ruin the wheel. It is a $25 lesson; take the free lesson on the included VCR tape first.

Really impressed. The ease of sharpening bits is very quick and accurate. Larger bits of 1/2 inch and larger takes a while longer, however, bits smaller than 1/2 inch can be done in a matter of seconds. Great machine for a reasonable price.

it works as advertised, seems well made and the learning curve is short. Time will tell as to its quality. I sharpened 60-70 drill bits the first day i received it . most were 3/16″ to 1/2 “.yep! they’re razor sharp. the smaller ones were broken and tossed years ago. my point is, if i can keep them sharp for drilling metals, i feel the smaller bits will be less prone to breakage. a shop vac hose placed near the split point opening will keep airborne debris to a minimun when sharpening. reading the great reviews here is why i decided to purchase the 750sp

As soon as I received this machine I sat down and watched the instructional video and then went out and tried it out on the worst and burnt bit I could find, then stuck it in the drill press and drilled a piece of 1/4″ stell and I was so impressed that I immediately drug out all of the bits I had up to the 3/4″ limit and sharpened them all. To me it is an impressive machine. If I had one reccomendation it would be that it would accept larger bits than the 3/4″ limit. I would highly reccomend it to anyone who drills in steel.
